The Sarthe region of France is licensed by the Automobile Club de France to host a car race. This would lead to the inaugural French Grand Prix, held on closed public roads over the course of 12 laps with each being some 103 km in length, outside the city of Le Mans. It was eventually won by Hungarian Ferenc Szisz in a Renault.
