The South African Sea Cadets from TS Woltemade and UCT Groote Schuur Residence spent their Youth Day clearing the litter from the Red Cross Children’s Hospital. Thank you to these young leaders for demonstrating that it is important to preserve communities and ensure that the children have a clean environment to play in.

Mikaeel started suffering from severe headaches last year. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with a brain tumour but thanks to the specialist doctors at Red Cross Children’s Hospital he had a successful surgery and it was removed. Mikaeel has fully recovered, has no more headaches and comes in for regular MRI scans. We asked him what his favourite toy was. “My dinosaurs, of course!”.

May is Burns Awareness Month.
In South Africa approximately 1300 children die every year from burns incidents, but hope lies at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital, which has the only specialised paediatric Burns Unit, within a dedicated children’s hospital, in Africa. Every year the hospital treats about 3 500 children for burns, giving them the fighting chance they deserve.

8-month-old Ayona was rushed to Red Cross Children’s Hospital after being burnt on his face, chest and arms, by hot water in a kettle. Nearly 70% of all burns admissions to the Hospital are caused by kettles. The Burns Unit at Red Cross Children’s Hospital is the only specialised paediatric Burns Unit within a dedicated children’s hospital in Africa.

Joanne’s world came to an abrupt halt when she heard her little one-year-old boy, Luke, cry out in pain. He tipped over a cup of very hot tea resulting in burn wounds on his chin, chest and right arm. He was immediately rushed to Red Cross Children’s Hospital. After receiving the best treatment, he is now able to go home and fully recover. Let’s send Luke our best wishes.
