The revelations coming from Scott Pruitt's emails are disturbing and unacceptable. He should not have been confirmed before the Senate had the chance to review them. His office stonewalled the release of the emails until after his confirmation and it took a court order for him to release emails that the public was entitled to and had been trying to obtain for years.

Further, a shadow is now...

"The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference..." Elie Wiesel

Dear Friend,

The rise in hate crimes in our country is disturbing and unacceptable. The below news of the murder of Srinivas Kuchibhotla and the severe wounding of Alok Madasani and Ian Grillot, leaves me deeply anguished. My thoughts and prayers are with them and their families during this time of unimaginable trial. But...

I sat on the plane this week with a beautiful family. The mother introduced her three children to me and opened up to me that her youngest daughter is a trans child. She is actually a documentary producer and is working on a film about trans children, a film that will try to confront and dispel the wide spread fear, ignorance and bigotry that surround trans Americans. She allowed me to watch...

We are nation with a deep, deep reservoir of compassion and love, not just for humanity but for all – for animals that we share this nation with. That’s why it’s so important that we focus our heart not just on the wellbeing of humans but on the wellbeing of animals.

On February 3rd, under the Trump Administration, animal welfare records were abruptly taken off of the USDA website, making...

Today we have a lot of challenges – I know activists and others may be feeling worn down and weary but let’s take from our history, that we should never, ever give up in the cause of our country. We must keep fighting.
I'm putting a very personal call out to everybody watching. This is a call to compassion, to empathy, to a greater level of understanding on what is going on in our country with regards to immigration policy.

There are immigration raids going on in our country, and hundreds of those caught up in those raids are not criminals, they are not those Trump claims he wants to keep out of our...

This should not be a partisan issue. A president who repeatedly and blatantly lies coupled with his refusal to acknowledge the grave threat that the Russians represent through their continuous cyber attacks on our nation should be deeply problematic - if not offensive - to all Americans.

Further, the President is clearly not owning up to the scandal within his administration. He should be...

"Our nation is built by immigrants and immigration is a strength, not a weakness. I am concerned that the new administration will continue to blame adverse events and future problems on people who cannot defend themselves. All people deserve our respect and support."

Speaking on the Senate floor against the nomination of Scott Pruitt for EPA Administrator.
I'm asking everyone to join me and others in calling for aggressive, thorough, exhaustive Congressional investigations into what is going on with Russian influence in the Trump administration.

We saw an unprecedented attack on our nation during our election with hacking, cyberattacks, propaganda and more from the Russians. The bedrock of a free nation is the ability to express yourself and...

Getting ready to join author Elizabeth Kolbert for a live chat Q&A to discuss her book, The Sixth Extinction — an important read that takes a hard look at the human impact on our environment. With a Trump Administration that continues to cast doubt on climate change science, it's never been more important to discuss the facts surrounding our changing climate. If you’ve signed up for my book...

No matter what, choose hope. It is the defiant conviction that despair won't have the last word. It's not a state of being, it is action; it is determined doing; it is the indomitable will to keep fighting for what is right no matter what the odds, the strength of opposition or the fierceness of the critics.

Last week, my office received more than 40,000 emails and over 2,000 calls from constituents, so I spent some time this afternoon with my awesome staff calling people back to address their concerns directly.

Please continue to call your Senators — your voices are being heard, and in many cases are pushing us and inspiring us to fight even harder. To everyone who has picked up the phone to...
