A fan called Jade works in the Newcastle Library in the UK. Every staff member in the library is allocated a month to do a display for an author of their choice. Jade's month is May, and here are a couple of photos of the display she came up with -- looks like the best display ever to me!!!!

Jade said she was "hoping to introduce a few more people to the wonderful worlds and characters you...

We live in troubling times, and the media keep feeding us one negative story after another (since bad news is what sells best), which makes the emergence of The Vault Of Awsomeness particularly timely and welcome! It's kind of the opposite reaction to the TV show Room 101 -- but where that show asks people to put their pet hates into a sealed room, this one asks people to put the things they...

I spent Easter with my wife's family, and look at what they made me wear!!! Grrrrrr!!!!!! Those of you familiar with my Zom-B books might be interested to learn that that's the real-life inspiration for Justin Bazini sitting beside me on the couch, while the other photos also feature people that other members of the Board (a collection of nefarious characters) were named after. Dante is...

The Shan Clan is back on home turf after spending a couple of weeks in London. We enjoyed a few days of beautiful, sunny weather during our stay, which resulted in Dante frolicking in some street fountains set in the pavement near Tower Bridge. The photos tickled my fancy, so I thought I'd share them with you lot, and hopefully bring a smile to your faces this Sunday.

A fan called Courtney sent me this drawing of a battered B Smith and a solemn looking Holy Moly. If you don't know who B Smith is, or are wondering who on earth would call their child Holy Moly, then you need to check out the books in my Zom-B series, which is where these characters hail from. Courtney has sent me lots of cool art over the years, but this is one of my favourite pieces. I hope...

Mr Crepsley from the Cirque Du Freak remains my most popular character among Shansters. We got to see a lot of him during Darren Shan's story, but I felt there was more to explore, which is why I went back and wrote a four book prequel series called The Saga Of Larten Crepsley, tracing his life over the course of 200 years from childhood to the point where he crosses paths with Darren and...

I often get asked for writing tips by budding authors, and while I like to think that I have plenty of advice to offer that is helpful, none of it will raise as much of a chuckle among readers as the attached list, which was shared with me by a fan called Rachel, who spotted it on sadanduseless.com :-)

If you'd like more serious writing advice, see the Writing Tips part of my site, where I've...

A fan called Kaleigh sent me this drawing of Mr Crepsley's hand after he was blooded. I've seen lots of fan art over the years, which usually focuses on the faces of the characters. It was nice to see someone take a different approach, offering up a drawing that is far more limited, yet says just as much about the person it's depicting. Nice one, Kaleigh!

If you're scared of clowns, don't look at the photo underneath!! Whoops -- too late -- you looked, didn't you?!? It's a photo of a fan called Kallisti, who dressed as Mr Dowling from my Zom-B books to enter a competition. Mr Dowling is one of my creepiest creations (many fans would say THE creepiest, although I've created a lot of creeps to choose from!), a mute, telepathic, homicidal clown...

There's been a new review for Lady Of The Shades, the last book that I released for adult readers before I changed my name to Darren Dash -- but it's all Greek to me!!! That's because it's by a Greek reviewer who got their hands on the edition that was published in Greece a few years ago. Oddly enough, it's the only book of mine to have been translated into Greek so far. A pity, as I've been...

I have a treadmill in my house, and I try to do a run on it two or three times a week. ("Try" being the key word! I used to be very regular, but it's harder finding the time since Dante came along.) My son, Dante, who is two and a half years old, started joining me in my stretching exercises quite a while ago, though his attention usually wanders after a few seconds. Here's a snap of the pair...

These words of wisdom come from a book called The Unmumsy Mum. A friend shared the extract with me recently, and it struck a chord, because I felt it could be applied far beyond the world of parenting. I think a lot of us do things in life that we don't want to do. That's often a good thing -- society couldn't function if everyone just did everything they wanted all of the time -- but...

Some fan art to help you kick your Good Friday off with a smile and hopefully turn it into a GREAT Friday!!! :-) They're both by a Japanese fan, but alas I don't know his or her name. The first is of Darren and Mr Crepsley, while the second features Vancha and (if my eyes don't deceive me) Debbie. I always like seeing how fans visualise my characters. You can see a lot of older fan art on my...

Here's yet another brilliant example of how teaching a book in class needn't be a boring exercise. This one come from the students at St Benedict's school. They were tasked with writing letters from the character Darren Shan to his parents, sister and friends. The letters were to cover the time after Steve had been bitten by Madam Octa, before Darren had his encounter with Mr Crepsley, when...

I featured a piece of creative classroom work in yesterday's post. Well, here's another, from a group of Year 7's in St Aidan's CofE High school in Lancashire. The challenge this time was for the students to write "chapter 12.5" of Cirque Du Freak, creating a freak of their own in the process. It's another good example of how you can teach a book to a group of kids while keeping it fun for...

I like the fabulously freaky Year 6 students at Bearwood. A few of them recently posted on their school's blog, and the aim of each piece was to intrigue and entice new punters into the world of the Cirque Du Freak -- i.e. they treated the book as if it was real, and tried to write an article that would persuade other people to come and check out the show. It's a good example of how a...

A while ago, I posted a picture of a cat sleeping next to one of my Zom-B books. That prompted a lady called Cheryl (who is actually the person that the character of Cheryl in An Other Place is named after) to send me in a photo of her cat next to a charming zombie baby. Where, you might be asking yourself, did Cherly get her hands on such a grisly looking doll? Well, if I told you she "stole"...

We took Dante to see 'Jeramee, Hartleby and Ooglemore' at the Unicorn Theatre in London this morning. There were only 3 words spoken throughout the show -- no prizes for guessing what they were! It was great fun -- Dante had a ball, and enjoyed it more than any other show he's been to. (And despite his tender age, he's been to quite a few!) It's interactive, and the theatre is exclusively for...

One final photo from my event at the Sci-Fi Weekender last weekend. This was taken during my main solo event, when I was interviewed on the main stage by fellow author Sam Stone. I don't really like being photographed, as I rarely like what I look like when I'm captured on film, but this one made me smile. I'm not sure what I was talking about at this precise moment, or why my fingers were...
