Camille Saint-Saëns's Le carnaval des animaux had its first public performance #onthisday in 1922. This fun musical suite is one of the composer's best-loved works, but was originally intended for private performance, and wasn't published until after his death in 1921.

Revisiting Antal Doráti's recording of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No.4, premiered #onthisday in 1878.

The symphony (and the opera Eugene Onegin, composed in the same period) is suffused with the difficult memory of his short marriage to Antonina a year earlier (although they would never divorce).
