It's 25 years since Messiaen died #OnThisDay in 1992. We’re listening to his Turangalîla-Symphonie – intensely colourful and extravagant playing by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, conducted by Riccardo Chailly.

Today we're listening to Robert Levin with the Academy of Ancient Music under Christopher Hogwood, and reading Shakespeare's Sonnet 128:

We’re listening to Haydn’s The Seasons, which premiered #OnThisDay in 1801 in Vienna. This recording of Antal Doráti conducting the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Brighton Festival Chorus is one of our favourites – it brilliantly captures the oratorio’s dramatic pull.

William Shakespeare died #OnThisDay in 1616.

Two days ago we wrote of the premiere of Macbeth in Shakespeare's Globe in 1611, and Verdi’s opera of the same name. Today we’re listening to Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night's Dream, conducted by Peter Maag and the London Symphony Orchestra. We love the sparklingly lucid textures and exciting tempi.
