Early on Sunday morning, 26th February a fire broke out at the derelict Goldmine pub, in Cowley Street, Shotton Colliery.

Fortunately nobody was injured, the incident is being treated as suspicious as it is thought to have been started deliberately.

A man armed with a knife held up the owner of a general store in Wheatley Hill last night.

The man, wearing a balaclava and dark clothing entered the store, on Wingate Lane at around 8.10pm on Thursday.

A kind-hearted police officer has been raising funds to care for stray dogs she came across while on holiday in Sri Lanka with her husband.

Claire McNaney, who works in the alcohol harm reduction unit set up a GoFundMe page to raise donations to bring the dogs to the UK.

The officers from the motorcycle section have been out and about the last couple of days keeping the roads safe.

Earlier today they were based at Wellfield, off the A19 taking part in a multi-agency operation checking lorries containing hazardous chemicals.

Excellent work last night by our volunteer colleagues from the RPU Special Constabulary team.

The female driver of this VW was arrested for drink-driving after a collision in Ferryhill, then they seized a second vehicle in Bowburn after the driver - who only had a provisional licence - was also found to be uninsured.

In addition the car had a number of serious defects.
