Did you know - a giant anteater's tongue can reach up to 50cm in length and they can eat up to 30,000 ants in one day!

These rare, South American giants are classed as Vulnerable on IUCN Red List. At Edinburgh Zoo they can be found at the hilltop near the Tiger Tracks enclosure.

Missing barn owl update:

Recently one of the barn owls went missing from Edinburgh Zoo, and we have been appealing to the public to help us find him.

We believe there has been a sighting last night in Peffer Place, near Holyrood Park.

Bookings are now open for our RZSS Education Spring School 2017 programme at Edinburgh Zoo.

The theme will be Africa to tie in with Summer School’s 20th anniversary celebrations next year (the first theme back in 1997 was Africa). The dates available are:

Are you having a new year clear out?

If so, we would love to take your old clean blankets, sheets, pillowcases and duvet covers to use as enrichment for the chimpanzees. Unfortunately, we cannot use actual duvets or pillow inserts. We would also love to get some old socks to use as well.

We need your help!

Earlier this week one of the barn owls went missing from Edinburgh Zoo. The barn owl sneakily flew past his keeper and out of his enclosure and his keepers have been unable to locate him since. Due to the high winds, at the time of his escape, he could currently be anywhere in the Edinburgh area. We’re appealing to the public to help us find him.
