A phoropter is the funny looking device with all of the lenses that used in many countries to test a patient’s eye sight. It was first called a phoro-optometer when it was developed in the 20th century. Phoropter was a trademarked name that later became a generic description for all phoro-optometers. ​

An estimate by the International Council of Ophthalmology shows that there are just three ophthalmologist per million in Myanmar. This small number of eye surgeons means that there are approximately 524,815 people in Myanmar who are needlessly blind due to cataracts.
