On this day 74 years ago the Fleet Mail office at Devonport Naval base in Plymouth deals with the Christmas rush. Today Devonport is the largest naval base in Western Europe supporting the Royal Navy since 1691. The vast site covers more than 650 acres and employs 2,500 Service personnel and civilians.
