“In the last year I’ve had the privilege of meeting people with a learning disability from across the world as part of my work as an advocate for the group Inclusion International.

By talking to other people about my experiences at the Inclusion International conferences I hope that I can help inspire others to achieve all that they want to in life, and for them to know that they are a...

"When Judy wrote that letter I think she wanted to change the lives of people with a learning disability.

I think my life has changed already because I get involved in everything. I think Judy wanted that for her daughter, Felicity, too.

There is a lot for Mencap still to do. Employment is important, we've just had Learning Disability Work Experience Week; only 6% of people with a learning...

“Rosie is 5 years old and has opened up my eyes to a wonderful new place to see beyond the myths associated with Down’s syndrome that I once believed to be reality.

If you are a parent struggling with a diagnosis, remember that for many, the process of making sense and coming to terms with things can be a marathon not a sprint. No matter how frightened, confused or worried you are you can...

"Luca was diagnosed with Down's syndrome just after he was born, and it was a huge shock for us.

We didn't get much information at all; we got a booklet about Down's syndrome but it didn't tell us much about real life. There wasn't any support available to us, the only support was through Mencap.

It's very hard to find other people in your situation, so there's that extra connection to meet...

In 1946, Judy, frustrated and angry about the lack of support available for her child, Felicity, who had a learning disability, wrote a letter to Nursery World magazine to reach out to other parents.

“She was inundated with letters from all over the country, over a thousand!”, says her daughter, Linda. “She managed to unite so many people all across the land, and across the world, in support...

"My experience with Vanquis was positive, there wasn’t anything that I didn’t enjoy. It was also really good to get to know new people and find out what their jobs were, and what they have to do within their job.

Personally, I feel that there aren’t enough opportunities for people with a learning disability to find work or work experience which could lead to getting a permanent job."

Next week, we will be celebrating 70 years since the start of the Mencap movement.

In November 1946, Judy Fryd wrote a letter to Nursery World magazine highlighting how poorly her daughter Felicity, who had a learning disability, had been treated by the local school.

We...

"I thought about doing an apprenticeship because I love to do practical work where I am able to put my skills into practice.

I admired the support and opportunities that Mencap are able to provide to individuals with learning disabilities and so I wanted the chance to be part of such a fantastic mission.

The skills which i have learned with Mencap are of high value to me and which will...

"My husband, Andrew, would describe me as practical, because I’m very good at making things. I make clothes, quilts and jackets, and can knit.

I met Andrew playing football. The ball was coming towards him and he fell over the football and I fell on top of him. Like falling head over heels in love. Everyone just laughed.

I’ve been with Andrew for 10 years, married for 7, and my hope for our...
