Two ways to draw a cat - by Siegfried Woldhek:

Around 1765, Thomas Gainsborough made several lovely sketches of a cat. Suppose you would like to do the same. You could start by making a detailed line drawing. But before you know it, you discover you’ve made a mistake, and you end up angrily erasing and correcting your drawing. It’s a lot easier to use the side of the pencil point to draw the...

‘t Heerlijk avondje is gekomen...

This week's drawing tip comes from Marleen Ram (junior curator of drawings).

'The best way to observe the smallest insects is by drawing them. This golden ground beetle, drawn by Jan Augustin van der Goes, is so realistic that it looks like it could creep off right off the paper at any moment. With utmost precision and probably using a magnifying glass, the artist reproduced the shine of the...

A couple is looking at children’s apparel in the illuminated shop window of the clothing store Bahlmann & Co. on the Nieuwendijk in Amsterdam. Isaac Israels spent much of his time in Amsterdam with George Hendrik Breitner. Both were fascinated by the idea of portraying city life by capturing a passing moment in time. To convey the sense of a snapshot, they cropped their subjects abruptly....
