Although some of Adriaen Coorte's compositions were complex, his strength lay in the simple depiction of a single, brilliantly lit object against a dark background. Coorte developed his subjects in detail and was able to make elegant use of light in his compositions. Many of Coorte's still lifes are painted on paper pasted onto panel, a rather unusual method in the seventeenth century.

Rembrandt married Saskia van Uylenburgh #onthisday in 1634. This work is believed to portray Saskia. The painting is not strictly a portrait, but a ‘tronie’, or fantasy head. The distinctive features – a domed forehead, slightly bulging eyes, and pronounced chin – are easily recognized in depictions of ancient goddesses and heroines that Rembrandt painted in the 1630s. The Greek philosophers Democritus and Heraclitus were considered to be polar opposites. In contrast to the old, melancholy Heraclitus, Democritus appears as a young, laughing hedonist. He points to the distance, as though that is where the folly of mankind is found. Meanwhile, Heraclitus leans on a globe and gestures dismissively, as if to say: ‘All is for nought, the world will come to...

During the summers in the 1860s, a group of painters gathered to work directly from nature in Oosterbeek, in the province of Gelderland. There, the Veluwe ridge of hills meets the low, broad valley of the Rhine. The generation of artists active before Bilders, the painters of the Romantic period, delighted in capturing that contrast. Bilders, however, singled out the ‘ordinary’ meadows in the...

Helena, daughter of a merchant, was not even three years old when Gerard ter Borch portrayed her. Yet her elegant dress and wicker basket make her look like a little grown up. Just visible on her back is one of her walking reins, which enabled mothers to support and guide their children’s first steps and prevent them from wandering off.

Together with Jozef Israëls, Roelofs is considered the doyen of the Hague School, even though he lived in Brussels. During the summer he made oil sketches in the environs of The Hague, which he worked up into paintings during the winter in his Brussels studio. Depicted here is the road from The Hague to the village of Stompwijk.
