Dart and Salcombe lifeboats were faced with an unusual casualty yesterday, when they were called to help an 8 metre and 15 tonne Humpback whale trapped in fishing gear. The lifeboats helped two members from the British Divers Marine Life Rescue organisation get to the whale and untangle her. Once freed the whale sped off.

Volunteer crew members from Sennen Cove and Penlee worked night and day to keep the crew of this 80m coaster safe. The cargo ship had suffered engine failure 3 miles from land early on Monday morning, and was drifting towards the shore. But the lifeboat crews teamed up to tow her to safer waters – and, as you can see, the conditions were challenging at times.

110 years ago today, a 12,000-tonne liner named SS Suevic hit a reef near the Lizard Point, Cornwall. It led to the biggest rescue in RNLI history.

Volunteer lifeboat crews from Cadgwith, Coverack, The Lizard and Porthleven rowed back and forth for 16 hours to rescue the passengers and crew. Their courage and perseverance rescued 456 people that day – including 70 babies. Not a single life...
