The Met Office are reporting that #StormDoris will be sweeping across the UK and Ireland today, therefore we are asking people to take extra care if they're going down to the coast. Rough seas and extreme weather might look exciting, but getting too close can be risky. So #RespectTheWater and, in particular, avoid exposed places where big waves could sweep you off your feet.

‘Something good out of something so tragic’
In February 2015, Andrew McGeown, aged 32, drowned while walking his dog Arnold at Scarborough’s South Bay, despite efforts to save him by the crew of Scarborough Lifeboat Station’s inshore lifeboat. Lighthouse keeper Grace Darling showed great courage in 1838 when she braved stormy seas in a small fishing boat to help rescue the stranded crew of the Forfarshire. To inspire a new generation of lifesavers, Boden have used Grace Darling as part of their Spring styles, with £1 from t-shirt sales being donated to the RNLI.

When a man fell from his kayak and was in the water for up to 45 minutes after not being able to get back on, time was of the essence and Youghal RNLI launched their inshore lifeboat and raced to his rescue. On this day 156 years ago, a great storm ravaged the east coast, wrecking over 200 ships. Whitby lifeboat was struck by a freak wave and capsized. Every single crew member was lost, apart from Henry Freeman - the only one wearing a new cork lifejacket.
