On this day, 9 December 1941, the first sighting of a Japanese aircraft by an Australian coastwatcher was made when Sub Lieutenant C. L. Page, RANVR, sighted an aircraft over Tabar Island, New Guinea, on its way to reconnoitre Rabaul.

SBLT Page again reported Japanese aircraft over Tabar on 4 January 1942, 40 minutes before the aircraft launched the first Japanese air raid on Rabaul.

On this day, 8 December 1917, the Town class light cruiser, HMAS Sydney (I) (Captain JS Dumaresq, CB, MVO, RN), successfully launched a Sopwith Pup biplane from a platform installed atop one of Sydney’s gun turrets.

On this day, 7 December 1959, the improved Tribal class destroyer, HMAS Warramunga (I) decommissioned in Sydney.
