On this day, 24 January 1986, the Royal Australian Navy marked the official beginning of its 75th Anniversary Year with a ceremonial fleet entry into Sydney Harbour led by Fleet Commander, Rear Admiral Ian Knox, embarked in the Perth class destroyer, HMAS Hobart (II) (Captain WSG Bateman, RAN).

On this day, 20 January 1958, the Royal Australian Naval College returned to Jervis Bay after 28 years at Flinders Naval Depot.

While the College had originally been established at Jervis Bay in 1913, it was relocated in 1930 as part of cost-cutting measures during the Great Depression, and many of the College’s buildings were leased in the interim as hotels and guesthouses.

On this day, 20 January 1942, HMA Ships Deloraine, Katoomba and Lithgow sank the Japanese submarine I-124 in the Arafura Sea.
