Impressive view of the nearly stationary cold front extending from Russia, across eastern Europe, the Alps, N Mediterranean into the N Iberian peninsula! Note the strong Scirocco winds in N-CNTRL Mediterraneand advecting warm airmass into the Alps and further northeast - this warm airmass will cause intense rainfalls and snowfalls along the orographic barriers in the region. Somewhat less brutal temperature anomalies across the Arctic over the next few days than we have been used to: some areas warmer than average, some colder than average (1979-2000 baseline). Most of the warmer than average area is over the Arctic ocean howeever, which will be further negatively affecting the already record low extent and volume of sea ice. Map: Climatereanalyzer

The cold airmass behind the central European trough can be nicely visible on this morning map today, spread across the W and N Europe, has been slightly below zero in parts of UK. Colder in Scottish Highlands and indeed Lapland which was again below -10°C! Cold over Carpathian Mountains and W Russia as well. Warmer but still rather cool over the rest of Europe.
