woohoo. Yet another race we've never heard of even though if they were common enough to be in Starfleet, we should have seen plenty of them in prior series, yet again. Where are the turtlenecks?

This isnt Trek.
07/26/2017 at 00:26
There have been so many interesting alien species that have been introduced in one episode and never seen again. Why can't they take one of those and just broaden and deepen their charactization, instead of trying to shoehorn in a totally new one that somehow no longer exists in any of the other shows? Kind of like what DS9 did with the Trill. But then I'm assuming CBS cares at all about the larger canon.

“A lot has changed in the past 300 years,” Captain Picard explains to a cryogenically unfrozen businessman from the 20th century in an episode of a later “Star Trek” franchise, “The Next Generation.” “People are no longer obsessed with the accumulation of things. We’ve eliminated hunger, want, the need for possessions. We’ve grown out of our infancy.”

Aside from the generic 60s aesthetic, I don't see "Star Trek" in these...
I do, however, see a "geek is in so we're gonna try to appeal to a wider audience by *saying* these were inspired by Star Trek" aesthetic.
So, there's that...

Interesting. I'd long been under the impression that the three lead Talosians were played by women.

Not to nitpick but Twiki was on Buck Rogers not Battlestar Galactica

EDIT due to calming down and being pointed out errors in my logic (some were quite rude, note I said SOME not all): She went from the Walking Dead to a show that, at least in the USA, is being streamed on CBS's streaming service ONLY. ugh, can I have a temp visit to Canada to see the show on TV or something? I do NOT want to pay for a new service for only one show basically, when I already have Netflix and Hulu.
07/24/2017 at 20:08
Oriville trailer felt closer to Star Trek than the DIscovery trailer. One I'll be able to easily watch at no extra cost in the US the other is locked behind a paywall...
07/24/2017 at 20:26
I real think the people who make decisions regarding Star Trek arent not really smart nor they have any sincere intention to make a good star trek. I am totally not hyped at all and I am the man who watched everything of star trek. I think I could rather torment myself with Cpt. Archer Enterprise and it's unguided torpedoes than cheer for Neanderthal Klingons who suddenly decided to go bald and wear funk club clothes. This Discovery looks exactly like something JJ would produce.

Pretty sure we already do live in the "alternate" reality where humans are evil
07/24/2017 at 15:16
Were the episode done today, Kirk, Spock, Bones and Scotty would be women, and Uhura would be a Man! Now's that's truly a scary mirror image.
07/24/2017 at 14:31
Wait, haven't we? Look for proof no further than the current politics.. Spock, where's your beard, where's my personal guard! I am sure moving up in rank through (character) assassination is next on the agenda..

Cause the show was written by humans then obviously humans are the most powerful, but I bet if we were watching Q's version of events or the Borgs ..... It's all about perspective. ;-)
07/23/2017 at 23:05
I forgot about the Q. Hated all those Q episodes. But surely Species 8472 is more powerful than the Borg? I mean Species 8472 kicked their ass! The Borg only won with the humans' aid. Which of course makes humans more powerful than Species 8472!
07/23/2017 at 23:05
They forgot the species Kevin (from TNG, the survivor) belonged to. The old man who wiped out an entire species for attacking his planet.

shouldn' Mudd be much younger if it's before Kirk was born? and before the Enterprise was built?
07/23/2017 at 10:26
They aren't in the Star Trek family until us the fans accept them. We determine if shows get a 2nd season or not... better not just be boom boom pow crash blam like the teaser showed. We want some good hard problem solving with science that seems legit and a good moral compass. While the last two Star Trek movies were entertaining, they were just that, movies. We have higher hopes for this upcoming series.
07/23/2017 at 10:22
Why do we keep going back in the Star Trek timeline? Why can't we have a post-Nemesis show? I don't care about the paywall issue much, I'm just so tired of going back in time with Star Trek. Enterprise was an abomination, and I expect this to be no better.

"If you love the legacy of Star Trek but hate (our diversity), you missed it."
Excuse me? How arrogant and pretensous can a person get?
If Discovery is going to play identity politics, perhaps it's best to skip it and maybe crap shows like Oreville will bat it in ratings.
07/23/2017 at 02:51
I am not watching because they suddenly decided Spock has a sister. Screw them. Enterprise retconned enough things, now this is going even further.

how to disappoint the Trek fan base....hmmmm.....put a new series online only, and on a subscription service site....so is it real Trek, or just a money marketing scheme feeding on the beloved franchise that is the Star Trek universe ????
07/22/2017 at 22:24
The show isn't even out yet, no one knows who these people are, in terms of the show I mean, of course. My gawds CBS is really pushing Discovery hard, cos they know its a piece of turd in waiting, they are trying to appeal to non-fans of Star Trek, I believe I even heard a quote about that. This isn't Trek, this is Space Sci-fi show #459. Orville looks more like Trek then this does for pete's sake.

Why is Discovery wearing the insignia of the Enterprise? In this time period, each ship has its own.
07/21/2017 at 13:03
Those are the rank pips? Wow, so visible. You can definitely tell who the commanding officer is in a battle situation :P
07/21/2017 at 13:17
I look at all the Trek mythos and all the untapped potential in a prequel. There are so many stories to tell from Star Trek that were referred to but never depicted that could be so, so interesting (Earth-Romulan War, anyone?). But I'm starting to agree with the folks who want the story to continue beyond the TNG era.
I have to say that I really love the Starfleet uniforms here, but I don't understand the massive shift in visual for both Starfleet and the Klingons that they've done here. One thing the Abrams films did well was Starfleet uniforms because they updated them without totally changing the visual feel (well, the formal dress uniforms were dumb, but the service uniform was good).
Perhaps the details like this aren't important as long as the feel of the series is right and the theme is on par with Trek. However, we Trekkers are detail-focused people, and details contribute to our perception of Trek.
I don't know, I'll be sitting in front of my TV at the premier, but it better be a darn good premier for me to get CBS All-Access to watch the rest. I understand what CBS is trying to do and I don't fault them on some level for it: Streaming is just the way things are going. But I think they're going to find that competing with the big dogs in that business is going to be a costly challenge, even if they end up being successful.

I always thought that that wink to Chekov was a bit weird. It's was supposed to be cutesy as though Kirk were acknowledging a child's accomplishment. It would have been better to leave it out. Anyway, I LOVE TMP, the Enterprise NEVER looked so BEAUTIFUL after that, & the music is INCOMPARABLE!

I think people sometimes misunderstand the point of the Kobayashi Maru story arc. It was a deconstruction of Kirk's deus ex machina victories in the original series, saying that in real life you sometimes can't have everything you want. Kirk beat Khan, but he lost Spock. He regained Spock, but lost the Enterprise and his own son. The theme of those movies was that some scenarios really are unwinnable, if "winning" is defined as victory without sacrifice.

I remember a SF convention at Torrey Pines in 1970. Star Trek shared a tiny room with The Man From Uncle and the fashion show was devoted to book characters from Empire of the Atom by A.E. Van Vogt. Who knew?
The Enterprise-C. One episode – merchandising for decades! I hope the ship will be featured in Discovery.
I have one of the Anovos Enterprise jump suits. Totally worth the price!
