The weather fined up beautifully here in Wellington, New Zealand this evening, and I wasn't even thinking about photographing the moon. But out the corner of my eye I noticed the 3.4% waxing crescent moon setting to the west so I ran to grab my camera and big lens and got this shot...next time I need to be prepared!

Hope you like the image and feel free to share.

Cheers

The Milky Way above Kaikoura, New Zealand.

I've spent a bit of time along this incredible coastline and I was there just 3 weeks ago before things in the coastal town of Kaikoura changed forever.

At 12.02am on Monday, New Zealand was rocked by the 2nd largest earthquake ever recorded since it's European settlement. The quake had a magnitude 7.8 with it's epicentre 60km south west of the...

It's the full moon today and the closest the moon has been to earth in 68 years, so it will appear a little larger than usual and also known in the media as the supermoon. Unfortunately where I am in Wellington New Zealand, it's absolutely pouring rain with gale force winds, so I won't be able to photograph anything! But I thought I'd leave you with a fun little film I shot with some other...

The media hyped "Supermoon" will appear in our skies on this Tuesday in New Zealand (Monday in the US), and it's the closest the moon has been to Earth for 68 years. Even though it will only appear 14% larger than when the moon is furthest from Earth (apogee), it will still be a spectacular sight as it rises above the horizon.

If you are planning to photograph the full moon and want to know...

I’ve been working some new time-lapse material lately and this is my first time-lapse shot on the SYRP Slingshot which I shot in Wellington, New Zealand. The Slingshot is a cable cam rig capable of shooting up to 100m and I believe this is the first time a cable cam rig has been used to shoot a day to night astro time-lapse.

For the tech geeks out there, here's a few facts of the...

Well what can I say - I held the A Night of Astrophotography with Mark Gee Christchurch on Monday and we had 150 people turn up on the night. We did a 90 minute session of theory, camera techniques and processing with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, and then we ventured out to a great location to photograph the night sky. There were certainly many highlights for me on the night, which also included...

Well what a night we had at The Art of Night Astro Workshop in Kaikoura New Zealand. The day started out raining, but by the time we finished the theory and processing part of the workshop, the skies had cleared almost completely and we were really excited to get out and take some photos of the night sky.

We had great conditions with the galactic centre of the Milky Way setting in the west,...

Astrophotography Workshop in Kaikoura, New Zealand
I'm on the road again and this time I'm in Borneo doing a short film on astrophotography with photographer Justin Mott and Canon Imaging Asia - Stay tuned - I'll post the link once the video is out.
I shot this image from a plane en-route to Borneo last night. It was a day after the full moon and the clouds lit up beautifully. You can even see the Southern Cross just below the light on the wing of the plane.

I wasn't really prepared for this shot, but it was so beautiful out there I had to give it a go - I had no tripod for the 1 second exposure, and I tried many times to get a clear...

I will never forget the moment I took this this photo - this was my first ever night in Norway, and most of us in this group had never seen an aurora. We were picked up by our guide who explained to us not to expect much as there hadn't been much aurora activity at all. As we drove along in the van, we suddenly saw out the window this huge green beam just flair up out of nothing, so we told to...

There's a lovely waxing crescent moon above Wellington, New Zealand this evening, so I thought I'd take a shot and show it to you.

For those in the Northern Hemisphere you may notice it looks upside down and the wrong way around. Well there is a good reason for this and this webpage explains it well: [ Wordpress.com Link ]

Hope you like the image (and science fact) and feel free to...
