The 3rd Annual A Night of Astrophotography with Mark Gee at the Red Rocks Reserve on the South Coast of Wellington, New Zealand had a great turnout despite of the cold conditions last night. 1200 people had registered for tickets for the event, and we had around 1000 actually turn up. A huge thanks for all of those who came. I certainly had a fantastic night and I hope you all did too!

New Zealand is blessed with dark night skies and little light pollution. Even within the cities the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye, and you don't have to travel far from them to find some of the darkest skies in the world where you can see the night sky in all of it's glory.

New Zealand - Under A Starry Sky is a collection of some of my most memorable time-lapse experiences under the...

It’s May and the Space & Science Festival 2017 is on again in Wellington, New Zealand. I would say I’m quite lucky and get to go on some amazing trips with my photography, especially when I got the opportunity to fly down towards the Antarctic Circle to photograph the Aurora Australis on-board an Air New Zealand Boeing 767.

But this time I also wanted to give someone else that same opportunity - someone who is passionate about photography, but wouldn’t normally get the same...

Last night was a great night for auroras. I was busy trying to finish up editing on a film, but once I saw people posting real time aurora photos on Facebook, I quickly grabbed my gear and headed out the the south coast of Wellington, New Zealand.

I missed the most intense part of the night, but I was still happy with what I managed to get, especially from Wellington.

Hope you like the...

I shot this image back in 2012 and it’s still one of my favourite images - it a photo of The Gap at Castlepoint which is on the south east coast of the North Island of New Zealand just a few hours from from the capital city of Wellington. I photographed the image at 3am, so I simply called it '3am at the Gap’

Hope you like the image, and feel free to share!

There's something special about the time of night just before the day breaks. The stars are still shining, although you can see light on the horizon as daybreak approaches and night turns to day.

I shot this panorama from the Cape Palliser Lighthouse on the North Island of New Zealand back in January just before daybreak. It was an amazing night of photographing the stars, and I shot right up...

Towards the end of last year, I travelled to Borneo to do a short film for Canon Imaging Asia with Justin Mott on astrophotography and using Canon 5d MkIV. We had a ton of fun making the film and you can see the final result right here towards the bottom of the page: [ Canon-asia.com Link ]

Hope you like the film, and feel free to share!

On Thursday night I boarded an Air New Zealand Boeing 767 from Dunedin, New Zealand to travel down towards the Antarctic Circle to view the Aurora Australis. This was the first commercial flight to view the Aurora out of New Zealand, and I have to tell you it was an amazing experience! A huge thanks has to go to Ian Griffin for coming up with this idea in the first place and then going through...

Today I'm embarking on a unique journey where I will be joining 150 other aurora hunters and photographers on a Air New Zealand Boeing 767 chartered plane, and flying from Dunedin in New Zealand south towards the Antarctic Circle. From 37,000 feet, we hope to photograph the rising Milky Way, and the Aurora Australis. I'm also going to be giving the world's first in-flight astrophotography...

Broken Head at Byron Bay in Australia is picturesque enough in the day time, but at night it becomes another world, especially when there is bioluminescence in the ocean. This particular evening I had set up to shoot a time-lapse, but the wind was quite strong and caked my lens in salt spray. So instead I cleaned my lens off and decided to do a bioluminescence selfie. I clicked the shutter and...

Last night around 9pm, the International Space Station was flying high above Wellington, New Zealand, and since it was such a beautiful night, I thought I'd get out there and capture the flight path.

For the tech specs, this image was captured with a Canon 6d and a 24mm lens. 30 second shutter @ f/9 ISO 500. I took seperate 6 exposures to capture the complete length of the ISS flight...

I love this shot of this little girl in Rwanda checking out my photo of the Church of the Good Shepherd from Tekapo, New Zealand. She is one of around 70 in a facility which houses girls who were saved from sexual abuse. They provide food, shelter, psychological rehabilitation and are currently raising money to start a medical clinic.

I’m a affiliate at WorldPix, and they were at the facility...

Blue Lake in the in the Tasman Valley of the Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, was originally named that due to it's intense blue colour. Unfortunately these days, the lake is more green than blue with brown algae growing on it's surface. Nevertheless, it is still a stunning place to visit especially at night.

Hope you like the image, and feel free to share!

Cheers
