Nancy Astor, Viscountess Astor, became the first woman to sit as a MP on this day in 1919 following a by-election. She wasn't the first to be elected. Countess Constance Markievicz was the first woman elected to the House of Commons, in 1918. However, as a member of Sinn Fein, she did not take her seat. #OnThisDay
